Catholic Campaign for Human Development
The National Conference of Catholic Bishops established the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in 1969 as the Church’s domestic anti-poverty program. By helping the poor to participate in the decisions and actions that affect their lives, the program offers to empower the poor to move beyond poverty.
CCHD is supported solely by private donations. The program is successful because of the financial support of Catholic parishioners who contribute to the annual collection that is scheduled the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
CCHD has funded more than 3,500 self-help projects developed by grassroots groups of poor persons. In addition, many smaller projects are funded through the 25% share of the CCHD collection retained by the diocese.
