Some of the best young musicians from New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania will perform at an April 28 concert sponsored by the Diocese of Trenton, Office of Worship.
Scheduled for April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 626 Olden Avenue, Hamilton, the concert will feature performances by the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra under the direction of Fernando Raucci, music director, and the Westminster Choir College Chapel Choir under the director of Sun Min Lee, music director.
“The Church has always been a patron of the arts and the Diocese of Trenton continues that tradition,” said Father Sam Sirianni, director, Office of Worship. “We’re excited to be working with the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra and delighted that we’re able to offer our support to new and young talent within the diocese.”
The concert will take place in two segments with the first half dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Its four parts, appropriately titled Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, will feature solos from Pierson Tu, Daniel Choi, Manfred Collado and Taylor Lee, respectively.
Following intermission, the orchestra and choir will perform selected works by W.A. Mozart, including his famous Coronation Mass. Soloists for the Coronation Mass will be Aurora Micu, soprano; Sarah Materiak, alto; Steven Brennfleck, tenor, and Brandon Gains, bass.
“The Coronation Mass is a sacred repertoire of various Masses,” explained Father Sirianni. “It’s drawn from a major collection of western music and composed in a style that was somewhat left beyond during the liturgical renewal in the Church.” He explained that because sacred music had changed from the Baroque style in which the Coronation Mass had been written, the music was not easily reintroduced into the Mass. Instead, sacred musicians perform the Coronation Mass independently, allowing the music to speak for itself in concert.
The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest groups of its kind in the United States. During its 45 years, the orchestra has trained thousands of talented youth musicians from New Jersey and Pennsylvania by providing music education beyond the scope that many public and private schools can offer.
In addition to serving as music director of the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra, Fernando Raucci is a professor of history of Italian opera at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. A native of Italy he has conducted orchestras in Poland, Russia, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Bulgaria.
Founded in 1949, the Westminster Chapel Choir represents Westminster’s rich history in the field of sacred music. Over the years, its scope and mission have expanded to also include secular works. Its music director, Sun Min Lee, is an assistant professor of choral conducting at Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Lawrenceville. In addition to directing the choir, she also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. Suggested donation at the door is $15 for adults, $10 for students/seniors. For more information contact the Office of Worship, (609) 406-7400, ext. 5571. |
