Bishop George W. Ahr established the Diocese of Trenton Pastoral Council in 1968. Since then, the Council has served as a means of communication between the Bishop and the laity. The Council focuses on and fosters vibrant participation in liturgy and social concerns.

Over the years the Diocesan Pastoral Council has been involved in a number of projects requested by the Bishop. These have included the drafting of models for parish council constitutions, the examination and study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and, most recently, the formation and nurturing of parish pastoral councils. The Council has always been available to the Bishop when he has wished to learn the views of the laity on a variety of subjects.

Parish delegates from 11 deaneries in the diocese meet with Bishop John M. Smith in fall and spring General Assemblies.
