Bishop's Annual Appeal 2008

Bringing Life to Faith and Faith to Life

A Letter from Bishop Smith

This is a special letter I write to you this year. I am asking you for a special gift. Why this year?
Over the last ten years, the Diocese of Trenton has experienced tremendous growth. In 1997, our Diocese was the 20th largest Catholic diocese in the United States. Today, we are the 16th largest diocese. The number of Catholics has increased exponentially, and our parishes are challenged to meet their needs.
With growth comes great need: more priests, deacons, well trained catechists, parish administrators, religious leaders, coordinators of parish ministries and school principals. Our Diocese must continue to provide for their ongoing professional training, which is funded by the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
Currently, the Diocese of Trenton is blessed with 30 seminarians studying in three seminaries. It is my hope this number will increase in the coming years. The diocese is financially responsible for their discernment, tuition, room and board, books and healthcare. Their funding is made possible through the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
Next to Florida, four counties of the Diocese of Trenton have the largest percentage of parishioners who are 55 years of age and older. Ministries for the aged, bereavement ministry, spiritual care of the sick and the homebound, ministering to their caregivers and caring for residents in healthcare facilities are possible by the generosity of those who make a gift to the Bishop's Annual Appeal.
In the meantime, many of our parishes are struggling financially. Their churches were built at the beginning of the last century and are in need of significant repair. All church, school, and parish buildings must be safe and accessible to everyone. Parishes struggling financially look to the Diocese for help.
This is a brief description of the spiritual, educational and material responsibilities our diocese faces. I look to you, our most dedicated supporters to respond positively to this special invitation for an increased gift this year, if possible. We need your help with the Bishop's Annual Appeal this year. As you read through the brochure, you will see the numerous plans in place...there are obstacles to overcome...there are needs to be met.
Please pray about it. Help us bring the message of God's love to all our parishoners. May Almighty God continue to bless you and your loved ones.

Most Reverend John M. Smith,
Bishop of Trenton
