Catechist Certification
Forming Catechists for Mission
"Catechist formation is an important and sacred ministry. Like a pebble in a pond, it affects persons and places far from the source. Catechists never know how hearts and minds have been touched by their ministry. They never know what simple gestures, kind words, or examples of their faith will plant seeds of love in the hearts of those they serve."
--Best Practices in Catechist Formation, USCCB, 2002
All those who teach religion in the Diocese of Trenton, in addition to being faith-filled Catholics, must be certified catechists. To be eligible for catechist certification, candidates must:
- complete 52 hours of prescribed catechist formation
OR
- hold an undergraduate or graduate degree in religious studies or a related field.
OR
- hold current catechist certification from another diocese in New Jersey.
